Hunterston House

Work to build Hunterston Mansion House, 4 miles south of Largs, next to the existing 13th century castle, began in 1799 for Eleanor & Robert Hunter.

The completion of the house saw the castle used as servant quarters.

Hunterston House is now a mix where it is a family home but of interest to Clan members. There are regular tours to interested parties but not enough demand to go down the "stately home" route. Recently, there was a tour around for the Hunterston Rotary Club which apart from the name has no connection.

The house has also been used for filming such as a BBC docu drama about Vincent van Gogh. We have also had 39 steps with Rupert Penrhy Jones, ITV Rebus was filmed with Ken Stott and a Sherlock Holmes film about the writers father. Also a docu drama about the Glencoe Massacre was filmed in the House and Castle.
