CLASS CRUISE SHIP ENT/SERVICE 1973 BUILT WARTSILA MARIN HELSINKI / FINLAND WEIGHT 28,388 TONS LENGTH 674 FEET WIDTH 82 FEET SPEED 14 KNOTS - DIESEL ENGINES. The fast growing Star Cruises purchased Superstar Capricorn in 1996. This ship was originally built as the Royal Viking Sky for the Royal Viking Line in 1973. The other two ships in this class were Royal Viking Sea and Royal Viking Star. As all three ships had new 110 feet midsections fitted in the early 1980s, their length was increased from 564 to 674 feet and their volume from 21,819 to 28,388 tons. The Norwegian Cruise Line bought the Royal Viking Line in 1984 and began operating Royal Viking Sky under the name Sunward 11. This ship was sold to Princess Cruises in 1993 to be operated under the name Golden Princess. After only three years at Princess, Star Cruises bought Golden Princess for the Far East cruise industry to be operated under the name Starship Capricorn. Hyundai Merchant Marine chartered this ship in 1998 to be based in Korea under the name Hyundai Kumgang. With the collapse of the Hyundai cruise line in 2001, she was transferred back to Star Cruises and renamed Superstar Capricorn. This cruise ship has 8 passenger decks, 2 pools, casino, fitness center, various bars, showroom, 358 outside cabins of which 10 have balconies, 77 inside cabins, can carry over 700 passengers and a crew of 450. Superstar Capricorn is now normally operated on cruises from Thailand - Vietnam and Cambodia. Royal Viking Star joined the Fred Olsen cruise line in 1996 under the name Black Watch and Royal Viking Sea joined the Chinese company Crown Investments in 2002 to be operated under the name Crown.
