Carnival Destiny was the first passenger ship to exceed the 83,676 tons of the largest Trans Atlantic liner Queen Elizabeth launched in 1938. Although 138 feet shorter, Destiny is higher with more passenger decks that run from near her bow to the stern. This design is more suited for cruising in calm seas than crossing the treacherous north Atlantic with waves up to 60 feet high. The Carnival Cruise Line will have nine Destiny class ships in service by 2008, the others being Carnival Triumph 1999 and Carnival Victory 2000. The other six at 110,000 tons are Carnival Conquest 2002, Carnival Glory 2003, Carnival Valor 2004, Carnival Liberty 2005, Carnival Freedom 2007 and Carnival Splendor 2008. These leviathans are powered by diesel electric machinery similar to that of the French Line’s Normandie 64 years earlier. The only difference being, Normandie’s generators were powered by steam turbines instead of the more economical diesel engines installed in most cruise ships now.

Carnival Destiny

Destiny has six thrusters with controllable pitched propellers, three forward and three aft, each driven by one 1,720 KW motor. These thrusters allow her to move sideways, this eliminating the need for tugs to assist in maneuvers in and out of ports. Destiny is also fitted with computer controlled retractable fin stabilizers built by the British firm Brown Brothers. Her 22 Harding lifeboats are situated on deck four. Each boat can be lowered in one single operation, this reducing the overall time required for boarding and launching. Destiny has thirteen passenger decks, a nine-story glass topped atrium, 200-foot water slide, casino featuring over 320 slot machines, 9 bars, four pools and a 1,500-seat show lounge. She has 519 inside cabins, 802 outside cabins of which 470 have balconies, 8 penthouse suits, can carry over 2,600 passengers and a crew of 1,040.

Carnival Triumph

Destiny is normally based at San Juan/Puerto Rico to be operated on 7 night cruises throughout the Caribbean.

Conquest mainly operates out of Galveston & New Orleans on 7 night cruises - Western Caribbean and Mexico.

Triumph's main routes are 7 nights from Miami - Western Caribbean and Mexico, and seven nights from Miami - Eastern Caribbean and Puerto Rico.

Glory is normally based at Port Canaveral to be operated on cruises to Florida, Mexico and the Eastern & Western Caribbean.

Victory cruises out of Miami on 7 night cruises - Eastern & Western Caribbean and out of New York on 4&5 night cruises - Canada.

Valor is operated out of Miami on 7 night cruises - Western Caribbean and Mexico, and 7 night cruise from Miami - Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean.

Liberty is operated on 6,7&8 night cruises out of Fort Lauderdale & Miami - Eastern & Western Caribbean.

Carnival Victory

The Carnival Cruise Line was founded by purchasing the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Canada in 1972. After being converted to a design suitable for use as a full time cruise ship, this liner entered service for Carnival under the name Mardi Gras. They had three more liners converted to cruise ships by 1978 and ordered their first new built cruise ship in 1979. Carnival acquired the Holland America Line and Windstar Cruises in January 1989, 50 % of the Seabourn Cruise Line in 1996; Cunard in 1998 and in a joint venture with Seatours bought the Costa Cruise Line in 1997. Since acquiring Seatours Costa shares in 2000, Carnival has been regarded as the worlds largest cruise line.
