Blair Castle, home of the Earls and Dukes of Atholl, in Perthshire, has an interesting history. In 1269, while the Earl of Atholl was in England for an extended period, a neighbour, John Comyn, started to build a Tower on the Earl's land. Atholl complained to King Alexander III, got his land back then incorporated the tower into his own castle. That tower now known as Comyn's Tower is the tallest part of the modern day castle. The castle has been occupied by attackers on four occasions, including being taken by the Cromwellians during the English Civil War. During the 1745 Jacobite revolt, Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at Blair Castle on his way south after landing at Glenfinnan. Inevitably the English army occupied the castle in 1746 as the Jacobite revolt came to its sad conclusion. The Jacobites under Lord George Murray, lay siege to Blair in what is believed to be the last castle siege in Britain.

The original tower had an extension added to it by the 3rd Earl in 1530 to form a Great Hall. The 2nd Duke began to transform the ancient medieval structure into a more fashionable Georgian residence in 1740. The 7th Duke commissioned the Edinburgh architects David Bryce and William Burne to remodel the castle in the 1860s/70s.
